Frequently Asked Questions
What is corten steel?
Corten or weathering steel is a self-protecting and durable rusty steel, the ideal material for our outdoor fires.
Advantages include:
Corrosion resistance. A protective patina develops over the steel as it weathers, which prevents water from seeping into the metal and corroding it from within.
Exceptional strength and durability. Can withstand extreme weather conditions, which is important here in Aotearoa. Corten is long-lasting, making our fires a sound investment.
Low maintenance and better for the environment. Corten is designed to weather naturally and doesn’t need to be painted or treated as it develops its own protective patina. It does not release any toxins or chemicals into the environment. The production of Corten also requires less energy than traditional steel.
Aesthetically pleasing. The unique patina finish that develops adds a beautiful naturalistic rust colour and texture to the structure.
Will my new fireplace stain my pavers or deck?
In the first few months of weathering, the patina on your outdoor fireplace can cause rust run-off which can sometimes stain timber, concrete or pavers. Once the patina is established, there won’t be any staining.
Staining can be avoided by:
Managing run-off by bordering your fireplace with gravel or stones that can be topped up or replaced as needed.
If you are installing next to pavers, leaving a 5-10mm gap between the fire and the paving, for run-off to disperse into.
Regular misting or using a damp cloth to wet the steel without run off, to speed up the development of a stable patina.
“Pre-patina” your fireplace with an acidic or salt water spray. This will create a stable early phase patina prior to installation and minimise further rust run-off.
Seal surfaces below fire with a washable coating to facilitate cleaning (i.e. concrete sealer).
Why is my fire dark grey and not rust coloured?
We supply our corten fires before the oxidation process begins, so your fire will arrive the colour of conventional steel.
Following installation outdoors, exposure to the rain, air and sunlight begins the rusting process. It will gradually progress through shades of bright orange, reddish brown to dark brown over the following months and years.
